Thanks for all the feedback on the desks. It was actually the guys at our local hardware store who recommended the toggle bolts after telling them exactly what I was doing and how much weight I'd be putting on the desks. Then again, maybe I should be listening to the internet experts. To be safe, I'm going to install some table legs on the desks that I plan to put hefty weight on but I'm not worrying about it beyond that. Worst case scenario if the whole set comes crashing down taking loads of PC hardware with it, that video will get tons of views, I'll have the PC parts replaced for free, and I'll make additional revenue on the follow-up videos, covering the costs of new desks and drywall repair which is already a tax write off. At the end of the day it's a stupid risk that my stupid privileged ass can afford to take. Stay tuned for the epic disaster video 😱

Damn you Kyle... just went out and purchased the 74” and 98” Karlby desks for my secondary setup. It will be an L shape config for me and my wife to have our personal desktops. Don’t want to put holes in my walls so I’ll be opting for some legs instead - those trapezoidal ones from your earlier vid looked nice!

I realize I'm about a month late to the party here but figured I could give a little professional advice. I'm an Architectural Engineer by trade specializing in Millwork so I actually work with projects like this on a daily basis. Like others have said the wing bolts attached to the drywall is a bad idea. They will eventually start to fail. I'm assuming these tables will be filled with equipment and you also have to take into account that if these are used as desks people will be putting their own weight onto the desk just through normal use. You absolutely should be securing brackets to a stud. Securing them to drywall probably cuts the load bearing of the tables to a quarter of what they are rated at. Now those brackets. They're probably fine but they're not necessarily "heavy duty". They appear to be those thin 1/8" brackets that I have actually seen fail under heavy loads. The brackets sold by places like Home Depot, Lowes or Amazon just really aren't that good. You have enough of them so they should be ok but a better option would be brackets from Centerline, Rakks or A&M. These are heavy duty brackets that would even hold up to someone jumping up and down on those table tops. General Rule of thumb is max of 42" spacing between brackets but around 36" is usually around where we space ours. 18" is the correct size for the depth of those table tops. I would also recommend not only using mending plates to hold the tops together but also using washers to make up for the height difference between the brackets. The mending plates should be enough but the washers will just ensure a flush and level fit. I hope this information is helpful and keep up the good work and stay safe during these unprecedented times.

toggle bolts into drywall is stupid for weight bearing surfaces! But at least you are going to get to do a video on how to repair drywall. Use drywall screws and screw them into the studs.

It's good seeing the new place coming together. The drywall anchors wil be fine, nothing to worry about there. Looking forward to the epic disaster video. The problem I have is that the "floating" desk has all those visible brackets holding it up! Outrageous! If only you had a friend who's into woodworking and other hardware related activities... If you don't have studs you can mount to, you can easily make a frame to mount the desktops to. Run some 2x4 (was thinking 4x4 but that might be overkill, if there is such a thing) up in the back corners and all the way along the back wall, sensible sized pieces coupled together should be fine if an 18' peice isn't practical. Fixing them to the drywall with those anchors, not for load bearing but just to keep them in place, and add some rigidity. Then repeat 18" forward, with some strategically placed slats to keep it all tied together. The open side would be be easy to add on using the same method, and the fake wall can simply mount to it. Hmm, giving myself some ideas here...

So, I am sure other people have said this, but... you can put the toggle bolts into the steel studs, and that gives you an incredibly strong hold. edit to add... there are much better hollow wall anchors than those toggle bolts that would be better, but still, you should go into the studs with them.

Not trying to be invasive but, I am wondering how you afford your lifestyle, barring the computer sponsorship of items specifically. Currently you have 2.05M subscribers, assuming 300K views per video... Are you or your spouse independently wealthy? Or do you both have "jobs"? I would go through the "expenses"; commercial location, ability to remodel house, buy computer parts, etc, etc, etc... Don't take this wrong, I'm just pondering...does your youtube channel provide the financial wherewithal for all of the above? All the best. Cheers.

Actually, it might work. Since it's 3/4" drywall it will bear some weight. I doubt the capacity is 450lbs per anchor though... I would trust up to 150lbs. With 3 anchors per bracket that is 450 lbs per bracket. Spaced every 16 inches that's not bad.

Dear Kyle wood and aluminium isnt magnetic, however steel is - thinking of your "studfinder". When buying continuous woodtabletops a good idea is to pattern and color match before you buy them - this could still be achieved, to me it looked like some of them are somewhat similar in the pattern, you could solve level differences by "wood dowels" I like your concept it could be an awesome setup. thank you for the video.
