Our new XXL Ensemble Desk Mats are now available!
Today is very nostalgic as we're taking a close-up look at my friends' decade old gaming PC! It was super high-end (at the time) and features all kinds of fun hardware, including an especially unique Cooler Master chassis. I may even gut the entire system and fill it with modern hardware, because that's just something I do sometimes.

Wow, this was my previous PC , but with the 950, 12gb of ram, and a GTX 460. I just just upgraded to the 3700x with a 580 I got for 90$ last year. Seriously, the first gen I7's were great! Power hungry but as I sit here going from tab to tab on my computer, I don't feel much of a difference, but I do with photo editing, phew! Still.. not the gain I was expecting going from a 64gb ssd in 2010 to an NVME in 2021. SSD's were affordable, if you just only used your OS and a few special programs on a 64gb drive, I believe I got mine at the time for $200, which coming from conventional platers, was mindblowing.

As for your comment of "technology is moving so quickly..." honestly, that's less of an issue in the last 5-8 years. Ever since cpu manufacturers have been focusing on # of cores and not clock speed, you can run a ton of new games on significantly older hardware. (Because most games (even today) are so poorly multithreaded that it doesn't matter, only clock speed matters.) My current CPU is 6 years old (6700k) and I can still run every modern game on the highest settings (unless the game is a PoS). My gpu is overkill for playing at 1080p, and I could easily run a GPU from that era (Like a 980ti) as well and still get above 60 fps.

I may be alone in this, but I freaking LOVE old cases. Especially old cases with removable motherboard trays. They were AWESOME. If they only had better cable management and support for USB3 IO I'd use them more often. They're just... so sturdy. EDIT: Oh yeah and if they only support 80 mm fans that's not super cool, but still fun for a computer where you're not worried about noise.

I still have my i7 930/SLI GTX470 computer. The processor works fairly nice as an Unraid server. Ever since I got into PC building around 2009, I do a gaming computer upgrade every 2-3 years and my computers just continuously get demoted down to my other computers. Got my i5 10600/RTX2070 current gaming PC, i5 4690/GTX970 living room HTPC/light gaming computer, i3 10100 security computer and finally the i7 930 as the Unraid plex/NAS computer. This year, I finally got rid of an AMD Phenom2 and a AMD APU computer. I will probably look into building an AMD 5800/RX6800 build and do the whole process over again when stuff gets back in stock which will finally see the i7 930 going away.

Funny enough, I have a case that is similar but a different color and front panel. One of the cool features is that you can completely take out the motherboard tray so you don't have to set the case on it's side.

I had an i7-920 clocked from 2.66ghz to 4.0 on air, using a Thermalright 1366-RT cooler, stable on prime-95 for 24 hours. Had that clock for 7 years until it finally burned out and that was probably because I never bothered to change the thermal paste on it. I still have that chip laying a round just for the memories. I remember that thing blew everything else out of the water when they released. They were really something else.

That thing had to have gone through a couple of different builds before the specified "10 years ago". The case is ~16 years old. I had the 2nd version with two toned color, side ventilation and I/O. Best case I had before the CM690. ETA - The case I had was actually the slightly beefier CM Cavalier 3 CAV-T03. It shared the funky wave front, but had different branding, and if anything, worse front ventilation.
