a sound card was considered an essential upgrade for PC gaming 20 years ago because some [if not all] on board audio solutions at the time, especially on older hardware for the era, would significantly tie up CPU & memory resources just processing sound alone, resulting in worse overall performance in game with sound enabled. On a < 1 Ghz machine with roughly around or under a gig of ram, a sound card can really make a difference. Consider that in 2001 not everyone was using top of the line, cutting edge XP machines outfitted with the latest kit; a lot of people were using older hardware, and they could've even been running an OS as old as 95. if you go back even further, you were forced to use a sound card if you wanted more than just PC speaker sound in your games at all, because on board solutions weren't standardized.

I've been enjoying all of his videos, then i came across with this. What we are today is because of these people. It is plainly ungrateful to make fun of them because THEY PAVED the way for the "MODERN" pc technology that we are all enjoying TODAY. It is all about respect.

My God The Sound from on board back in 2001 was so FUCKING BAD. Creative Labs screwed themselves and the world back in 2004 by allowing Realtek to drive them almost out of business. I believe the last sound card I ever bought was in 2008, for gaming purposes. I know my buddy just replaced his one from 2014 for music mixing. Also the GeForce 2 were amazing, the GF3 were nice, but man the whole line up for GF4 were just fantastic.

The very first computer I built in was in a knockoff Alienware green tower like that one. My housemates were none to happy that I didn't consult them on my tower choice. They were also surprised when the computer actually worked because I halfway knew what I was doing. The case did have some horrible cooling issues though. I sometimes had to run it with the side off to prevent overheating. Around the same time, one of my housemates bought an actual Alienware computer and paid at least twice what I did. We all made fun of him for it!

The thing thats sad about the death of sound cards was the death of leaps in sound technology like eax. Since the sound card death its been very slow geting those kinds of things in games
S1l3nc3r Vor Tag
Yep, Creative Labs legit screwed themselves and the consumers over by not taking the offering they had on the table thinking no way would the sound card move to standard on board. Realtek a company with 0 sound experience comes in and just changes things forever.

Stewart's right. My family got our first home PC in 1998. It was a Compaq Presario with a Pentium 233 MMX, but had onboard graphics. I convinced my parents to let me upgrade it with a Voodoo Banshee. You laugh about the sound, and how it isn't important; it's exactly that attitude that had people just accept the shitty 1990 sound hardware in their motherboard, which prompted Microsoft to close off low level access to sound channels; which finished off the remaining sound card business. Do you know how horrible that is? We're stuck with 90s level sound! The sound people had in 2001, let alone 2004, is better than the crap we have now. And that what they shown was just proper 5.1 channel sound... Yeah, sure, we have hardware that puts out 7.1 discreet channel sound; but how any games actually use them, for real, not just stereo duplicated, like what that guy said most of the hardware was doing at the time; like that crap in our motherboards. Do you know why DrDisrespect constantly has to complain about the sound being badly developed and he didn't get to hear people coming right up to his right/left? Because you people have been telling hardware and software developers that sound isn't important for games. So since the hardware didn't develop, neither did the software! The sound design and whether or not you can hear something or someone, is still no better than Doom 1993, if it isn't bloody well, worse! And then to think, it wasn't even EAX which Creative had already put in their cards by then that the guy was talking about; which would have been the prototype for a wave tracing sound card, which we would have had a decade ago, half of one ago at the latest. Sound wave tracing? Yes, as, in, you upload the level map, probably slightly simplified, to the sound card, which can then accurate simulate how sounds from different frequencies travel through that level; making you have accurate sound mapping and accurately hearing of enemies, or vice versa. Imagine having to check your own breathing if you have a mic open in stealth games, because otherwise the enemies will detect you. How's that for immersion? (Indeed, developers wouldn't need so much sound design; the hardware does all the hard work for the.) We have VR, and raytracing graphics cards; but our sound hardware is still 1990s level; we get thrown out of being immersed in that level of graphics because the sound is crap. "Hey, look at all that awesome City 17 in VR, this is... hey, wait a minute, shouldn't I be hearing you? ...and you, shouldn't you be hearing me; I"m not particularly stealthy; why are you just continuing to stand there." Stop with the laughing, and start buying sound cards again; bring back EAX, bring us Sound Wave Tracing!

saying black & white looks boring as hell until you start sacrificing people, and throwing people off the island to thin the flock :). i was playing q3a on a p3 800. i usually upgraded my video card first going up to a voodoo5 5500, and then switching to ati when microsoft put out an update or service pack for win2k that disabled the 2nd gpu making unreal tournament have a crappy framerate.voodoo was bought out by nvidia, and did not make new drivers to support the 2 onboard gpu on a relatively new card. i was so pissed at nvidia due to the dropped support as my reason to going ati. i didn't switch back to nvidia until i was in a bind when my ati 9800 pro died the day of a bf 1942 match, and has to run out and grab a cheap asus gt 9800 that is still kicking around for use in a retro rig. been using nvidia ever since.

Actually sound was pretty important back then. Kyle you need to watch a bit of LGR and get an appricitation for how much we have progressed in sound tech that its a complete non-issue now. The sound card you had could vastly change how your game sounded. So much so that what you may know of some familiar sounding game songs could be unrecognizable due to the sound card you were using. I know now a days sound isn't even a thought but in the early 2000s and 90s, it was extremely important. Hell some games just may have no sound due to incompatibility with your card.

Racing games can be very very hardware intensive. Assetto Corsa Competizione in VR has used up to 16gb of VRAM. All the AI drivers take up a ton of CPU usage, rendering all those cars uses a ton of resources.
